Techie types - wifi boosters
|
This is obviously the place to come (fuck you, gank). Old Victorian property over three floors. Thick walls, ceilings and owner. 13 bedrooms (very, very small hotel) and the wifi will barely reach the 1st floor. Brand new router from Sky which looks shiny and sexy but doesn't perform well - certainly away from the ground floor.
The boosters side perused online appear to be plug-in hobbies which need Ethernet connection to the laptop/device you wish to use upstairs. Obviously this doesn't work with thirteen different sets of guests in thirteen different rooms across three floors.
Is there anything on the market which you can just plug in - maybe one on each floor (?) - which boosts the signal across the property so that every miserable bastard can use wifi and stop whinging at me?
Utterly in your debt for what is sure to be a list of helpful answers.

Hmmmm. Victorian, you say?
AUTHENTIC Victorian, is it?
Just poke Ethernet cables through the old gas pipes & waz a cheapo-Charlie car-boot router on the end of each one.
Drape with lace doilies for that rustically aged homely feel

Crikey. So far this morning (on here) I've been threatened with decapitation and the displaying of my scooped out head in FatKev's bathroom* and now a thoroughly good towelling by BUSTER via a 2-pin travel plug. I remember when we all had respect for each other. Other than Ratched, natch.
*still lives with his Mum so will need permission.

I think what you were meant to say is THANK YOU. You ungrateful CUNT.
I've a good mind to come and repeatedly smash a plug into your face. How would you like THAT?

20 odd posts, and no one has told you to wipe your knob on it.
Saying that, going by your last post, you did. Brave man.

You weren't complaining when I molested you under the light of my current lamps. Ok, you were...but everyone likes a little bit of rapey.

The powerline adapters of various sorts work very well. They'll happily connect outbuildings as long as the wiring all runs to the board, which would generally be the case. Much better than signal boosters in my experience.
Nurse that's a bit of a seaside postcard straight line there.

Have you considered getting a more powerful wifi router first that will increase coverage? Normally the wifi boxes suppled are considerably weak. If you have to get across numerous floors, starting with a more powerful router may be the only way to provide complete coverage as well as using extenders?
Personally used extenders and did not like them.
I used the Apple Airport Extreme to boost coverage and did not need the extenders. It also backs up our PC's.
Netgear Nighthawk 1900 and 1750 offer really good wifi coverage and speed and are probably more powerful than the Apple product.
If you load a free wifi finder app on your iPhone, it can help you map coverage in the house.
If it was me I would start ground up, get a better router and go from there.

Spot on, TP Link extenders work a treat.
